Colour areas

We’ve now learnt all about the NCS system and colour combinations.

There are also major benefits of working with defined colour areas in the triangle. In addition to colours in similar areas looking good together due to their similarities, different colour areas also have different purposes.

Four areas to keep in mind

This is how we divide the triangle in colour areas on a basic level. Let’s look at what the areas are called and what their uses can be.

TONED

This is one of the most used colour area in colour design worldwide for many reasons.

CLEAR

This colour area is mosed used for details and perfect as an accent colour.

DEEP

Deep colour are perfect on details like curtains, rugs and smaller furniture’s in light rooms to create a balance.

MIDTONES

This area is for those who would like a more chromatic colour that is not too intense.

TONED – ONE OF THE SAFEST AREAS

These low chromatic colours are a safe and perfect choice for larger areas, in both interior and exterior environments.

Children have a lot of energy, so they need a place to calm down. Even though children love bright colours, it’s not practical to use them in a child’s bedroom. Children are already full of energy and don’t need colours to make them even more energetic.

Toys are usually very colourful, as they are designed to prompt children to be more active as they play. We put colourful toys away when we don’t want children to run around and play anymore. Therefore a low chromatic pale coloured room would be ideal for a children’s bedroom.

CLEAR – PROVIDES ENERGY AND A PERFECT ACCENT COLOUR

It is not common to see colours from the area CLEAR on the wall since it could easily be perceived as too chromatic. Here we see a colour from the area Clear, but it is from the low chromatic area within Clear. Normally we see colours from this area on products and details that wants to be highlighted. Just like the case of KitchenAid product.

MIDTONES – MORE CHROMATIC BUT BALANCED

For those who are looking for a more intense feeling, yet not too colourful, this area is your go to. These nuances will create beautiful orange and pink colours.

DEEP – POWERFUL, MYSTICAL AND INTENSE

In this area you will find everything between the dark inspirational nuance to the chromatic and colourful nuance with a total of 70% chromaticness.

This is where you find the powerful red nuances that are perfect for exterior colour design.

We see a lot of details from this area but also as a wall colour for interior design, but then mainly from the low chromatic area within deep.
